Gift certificates are great for presents and can be used as give-aways to entice folks to come back to your store at a later date. A gift certificate is just a store credit that requires a code, or Gift Certificate Number to redeem.
CREATE GIFT CERTIFICATE CODES
It's a good idea to keep a stock of un-activated gift certificate barcodes around for when someone wants to buy one at the register. You can create gift certificate codes in the MORE > GIFT CERTIFICATES > GC ACTIONS > PRINT GIFT CERTIFICATE BARCODES
The most secure way to generate barcodes from this form is to use the RANDOM CODE style. We also use a date-based code sometimes in our store, so that's also an option. You can see the method of calculating those below.
TIP: In a pinch, if we need to create a barcode number on the fly because we've run out of generated barcodes, we create barcodes formatted as: CSAGCYYYYMMDD##, where the YYYY is the year, MM is the month, DD is the day, and the ## indicates the number you've created that day. This way, we can create a bunch of barcodes in advance and prepare gift certificates to be sold on demand.
If we created three gift certificate barcodes on March 19, 2023, they would be CSAGC2023031901, CSAGC2023031902, and CSAGC2023031903
SELL A GIFT CERTIFICATE
- Gift certificates can be sold within a transaction using the ADD A GIFT CERTIFICATE button.
- Enter a price and a unique code (we recommend generating barcodes in advance for this) for your gift certificate and then add it to the transaction.
- When the transaction is tendered and locked, the gift certificate is created and ready for immediate use.
TIP: You can add discounts to the gift certificate by clicking the pencil icon next to the price on your transaction. Discounted gift certificates retain the original price's value when you lock the transaction.
